• 4.0 out of 5 stars from knickerbocker -- Solid book on explaining the Deep South : I always thought of the Mississippi Delta as the area below New Orleans. But a very important piece of southern geography is a huge swath of land between Memphis and Vicksburg: the "other" delta, where the topsoil was 40 feet deep, the floods were dreadful, the overgrowth and snakes and bugs formidable, cotton grew like crazy, and it took thousands of slaves to grow cotton there. It seems to this New Jerseyan that all the things that made the south what it is existed in triplicate in the Delta. The typeface is hard to read, like it was scanned and reassembled badly, but I'm plowing though anyway. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2019 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Margie Read -- Deep in the Delta, Heart of Dixie : Even people who live in other parts of Mississippi have trouble understanding "the Delta". This is a good place to start that education of a strange but very different part of the state of Mississippi and the United States as well. This doesn't mean it isn't a wonderful place--just different--in life style, culture, and philosophy. When I was in college at the University of Mississippi, we would wait each fall to see how the students from the Delta arrived. If in new convertibles with leather luggage and the latest style new clothes, we know they had a good cotton crop. If on the Greyhound bus with cardboard luggage, we knew the crop was not so good. Delta folk live by the soil and the river which has dealt them terrible blows over time as well as leaving the most productive soil in the country. James Cobb does a fine job of revealing much of this strange land. Read this book and learn as you enjoy exploring its fascination. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2013 )

It is packed with a lot of information, but reads like a dry dissertation. I finally put it down from sheer boredom. There is no life to this book. Mikell -- A very good beginning : This is a book that helps us understand, politically, socially and economically how we came to be where we are as both Americans and Southerners today. There are many of us who have benefited in direct, but complicated ways from this time who would like to forget it and move on. It's all there--race, historical context, economics, and culture. Everything you ever wanted to know about life in the deep South is in this book. The anecdotes of T.M.S.P.O.E. are really its best parts--it has more recent examples of why this area of the country has evolved (or not) into what it is today. The author is an academic so understandably its referenced and the language is slanted to that audience i.e. some may find it a hard read at times.
